Il bel Danubio blu in questi giorni rimane solo un miraggio, uno spartito da Capodanno. Il grandefiume, il secondo per lunghezza in Europa (dietro al Volga), il più lungo tra quelli navigabili in Ue, è avvilito dalla sete. La portata del corso d’acqua è scesa a un minimo storico e insieme alla questione ambientale – che si fa evidente davanti agli occhi e supera eventuali tentativi di dibattito o autentici scetticismi sull’emergenza climatica – emergono dalle secche soprattutto le preoccupazioni sull’energia. Così come l’acqua del Danubio è stata sorgente di vita per i molti Paesi che attraversa, negli ultimi anni è diventata fattore essenziale per l’autosufficienza energetica. E domani, venerdì, la Romania inizierà le operazioni di spegnimento della sua unica centrale nucleare, per la quale le acque del Danubio sono fondamentali per il raffreddamento. Si tratterà del primo arresto dell’impianto dalla siccità del 2003. “L’unità 2 della centrale nucleare di Cernavoda – ha dichiarato il ministero dell’Energia in un comunicato – verrà spenta in modo controllato a partire da domani, alla luce delle attuali condizioni idrologiche”. Si prevede che fonti alternative, tra cui l’energia eolica e le importazioni, garantiranno la fornitura di elettricità; il ministero ha inoltre ribadito l’appello a un “consumo responsabile“.
La centrale, che solitamente genera un quinto dell’elettricità totale della Romania, aveva già arrestato uno dei suoi due reattori nucleari da 700 MW alla fine del mese scorso. Anche il secondo reattore avrebbe dovuto essere spento, ma le operazioni di dragaggio e altri interventi per convogliare una maggiore quantità d’acqua del Danubio verso l’impianto hanno permesso di guadagnaretempo. Tali sforzi, con costi complessivi stimati in oltre due milioni di euro, hanno incluso anche la demolizione controllata di una roccia e l’affondamento nel fiume di quattro chiatte cariche di pietre nel tentativo di deviarne il flusso. La centrale di Cernavoda rimase ferma per diverse settimane nel 2003, quando era in funzione un solo reattore.

La siccità del Danubio provoca problemi anche in Ungheria. Il premier Peter Magyar ha annunciato che il governo ha ordinato la costruzione di una diga sommersa vicino alla centrale nucleari di Paks. Due chiatte di 80 metri sono state inoltre posizionate presso Paks e potrebbero essere affondate per innalzare il livello dell’acqua. La centrale di Paks, la cui produzione da quattro reattori nucleari copre solitamente circa un terzo del fabbisogno elettrico del Paese centroeuropeo, è già parzialmente chiusa dalla fine del mese scorso.
L’Unione europea è in allerta e ha già organizzato riunioni di gruppi di coordinamento. “Stiamo monitorando attentamente la sicurezza dell’approvvigionamento elettrico collegato alla siccità e al basso livello dell’acqua nei fiumi, sia in Ungheria, Romania o nella regione dell’Europa sud-orientale – riferisce una portavoce – La situazione generale è critica per quanto riguarda i livelli dell’acqua, ma è sicura e stabile”.
