First boat carrying migrants from Italy arrives to Albania
epa11661889 A group of migrants intercepted in Italian waters arrive aboard an Italian navy boat at Shengjin, Albania, 16 October 2024. Italy has begun sending migrants rescued in the Mediterranean to detention centers in Albania, where their asylum claims will be processed. The plan, finalized in February 2024, allows Italy to transfer up to 36,000 asylum seekers to Albania annually, with the goal of deterring migrants from attempting to reach Italy. While the Italian government and some EU leaders support the program, human rights groups criticize it for potentially putting migrants at risk and exposing them to rights violations.
